Provenance

Nichola graduated from Middlesex Polytechnic in 1975. Her first film on leaving college, which she co-directed, BREATH OF AIR won the UNESCO/BBC young filmmakers award and was screened on Christmas Day by the BBC. She went on to form MUSCLE FILMS and KRUDDART with Mike Coulson, making a series of short experimental films BREATH OF AIR, BOOLEAN PROCEDURE, CLIP and WINGS OF DEATH a 35mm short (British Film Institute) which went on to win Ist prize at Sitges Cinema of the Fantastique and other awards. They also created artwork for many leading magazines and publishers including New Scientist, New Society, Penguin Books. Faber and Faber, British Film Institute, and other leading institutions. They published their own punk fanzine, and evolved and designed books such as Poguetry for Faber featuring Shane Mcgowan. During this time Nichola's collaborative work extended to overseeing and working on storyboarding on Neil Jordans Company of Wolves, Arnauds Selignac's Little Nemo and Julian Temples Absolute beginners. The also designed publicity and posters for film directors, and Exhibitions such as Plan's and Conceits for Peter Greenaway. After being retained by Godley and Cream's, Media Lab to concieve ideas and direct music films. The collaborative partnership continued in 1991 with THE HUMAN FACE featuring Laurie Anderson for BBC'S Arena in which Nichola co-directed and co-wrote the music.

Professional Experience

From 92-93 the partnership of Nichola Bruce and Mike Coulson worked exclusively for Peter Gabriel, developing a visual wing for multi media and co-ordinating promo's, Stage concepts, contributing to World Music documentaries,and many other forward looking projects including award winning Interactive C.D roms. Throughout 94/95, Nichola made documentaries as a series director and series producer for BBC and Ch4. Her solo works include HANG ON A SECOND (on the taking off a second from the world clock) televised before the news. She made THE DRAMATIC ART OF STEPHEN BERKOFF opening Channel Four's theatre Week. Also the short film O for the feature MADE IN HEAVEN, which opened the Venice film festival and was described as having "uk's most inventive film directors" . Nichola began filming entirely digitally in 96 on the THE MONUMENT featuring Rachel Whiteread. She documented the Roundhouse Installation TIGHT ROARING CIRCLE for Art Angel. Co-ordinated the stage/rave performance HALLOWEEN SPECTACULAR, at the Camden Forum for Virgin featuring many bands. She directed the short drama THE LOVED. She continued to paint, draw and exhibit work. Her debut feature I COULD READ THE SKY was described by Screen International as 'restoring faith in the artistic possibilities of cinema.' Winner of The Don Quixote prize and Tiger award nominee, she was also awarded by Variety Magazine, as one of Ten Digital directors to watch 2000.

Career Apex

She was nominated for a National Endowment Science Technology and the Arts Fellowship (2002- 2006) during which time she researched and began work on a series of films on perception and the moving image. In 2005 she set up ENTOPTIC VISIONS and began a series of collaborations with the artist and performer Rebecca E Marshall. They have worked together on installations, exhibitions and performance. In 2006 they created a dance projection for Shobana Jeyasingh dance co. Exit no Exit which was performed at the Linbury. Royal Opera House, London and is currently touring.
